Recently, I searched Google for the most attention-grabbing, influential, click-friendly words that businesses can (and should!) use in their content.

 

In two hours, I found a great deal of consensus on the following 10 words and phrases:

 

  1. You / your

  2. Because

  3. Free

  4. New

  5. Proven

  6. How to

  7. Now

  8. Exclusive

  9. Easy / easier / easiest / easily

  10. Improve

 

So why do these words work so well?: 

 

  • They speak directly to the reader (you/your)

  • They explain cause and effect (because, improve)

  • They promise simplicity (easy/easier/easiest/easily, how to)

  • They stir up excitement (new, free, exclusive)

  • They encourage quick action (now)

  • They create trust (proven)

 

Of course, words can mean different things to different people in different contexts.
