I'm a freelance writer - meaning I am a "writer for hire."
But that's not all: throughout my career, I've written a whole whack of other things including annual reports, email campaigns, white papers, landing pages, and product and service descriptions.
As for the subject matter?
Well, let's just say I've written content on an incredibly wide array of topics.
So. Many. Topics.
To paraphrase Forrest Gump, being a freelance writer is kind of like a box of chocolates.
You never know what topic you're going to get (or be asked to write about).
One day, I jotted down every subject I could think of that I'd written about as a freelance writer.
I came up with almost 200. And that was just off the top of my head!
A long, diverse list
Employee engagement. Innovation. Polar bears. Software. Heritage buildings. Carpet cleaning. Bombs. Botox. Sliding doors. Literacy. Fundraising...
The list is long.
And not only that: my topics list is diverse.
Like really diverse. I've written:
heart-wrenching stories about near-death situations;
"fluffy," fun, amusing blogs on topics like food fights;
stripped-down, tell-it-like-it-is content for technical guides;
historical, fact-laden articles about warfare; and
content for business audiences, on topics to help them turn a profit.
Writing isn't just about writing
I've learned a lot throughout my career about many things. You could say I'm a mini-expert on a ton of random subjects.
But bear in mind: writing about specific topics isn't as simple as just sitting down and writing a few paragraphs.
Writing is about taking a topic and finding a way to get your target readers' attention in a busy, loud, information-driven world.
an understanding of your audience's needs, and
a sense of what will drive your audience to absorb your content.
In other words, if you think strategic, solid writing is a steady stream of consciousness...it's not as easy as that.
But I still love it.
And now...the list!
The best part about being a freelance writer is that this job is never, ever boring (although, granted, some topics are more interesting than others).
Just look at everything I've written about!
